In this entry, we will show you how to create bookmarks and a few different scenarios where they might be useful. Power BI Bookmarks are basically used to store the status of a specific report page including the filter selection and the visibility of the different objects, allowing the user to return to that same status by simply selecting the saved bookmark.
Power BI Bookmarks are included by default with any version later than March 2018. In previous versions we must include them by using the preliminary version features from the menu: File> Options and set-up > Options > Preview features. Once we have enabled this functionality, we can start using them.
In order to create a Bookmark, we must go to the View menu and select the “Bookmark panel” option displayed in the right-hand side column. To create a one new Power BI bookmark, simply click on the “Add” option in the Bookmark panel.
Bookmarks can be a very powerful tool that will add further dynamic features to your reports, for example:

In order to do this, we must first copy the table shown in the above example and change it to a map type.
Once we have both previews, we can use the selection panel (In the View, selection panel menu) to hide or display objects on the page. In this case, we will only use it to display the table and hide the map that we have created. We will also add a few images that will work as buttons to pretend that we are changing the graphics representation.
We will follow the same process, although this time we will only leave the map and the selected images on display before creating the “map” bookmark.
Finally, we will use the images to change from one bookmark to another. In order to do this, click on the image and go to Action > Bookmark Type > Bookmark name in the menu. Then we can follow the same process with the other image, in order to select the map bookmark when we click on the bookmark table.
It is also important to unselect the “data” option for bookmarks in order to ensure that any data filters selected when creating the bookmarks will not affect browsing.
In the above example, we only changed the type of graphic. However, we could obtain different analysis perspectives in a single page by using the same method of hiding and displaying elements on the same page, in addition to the button/ images, in a dynamic manner.
We can also use bookmarks to tell a story, or simply to do a presentation. This is achieved by preparing the individual steps for the presentation or story that we want to tell, such as:
If we had to do a presentation displaying the match results for Barcelona, Celta de Vigo and Real Madrid football clubs, we could create a Bookmark for each team selection:
we would select the bookmark panel view menu in order to do the presentation
Finally, we could run through the different bookmarks by using the controls available at the bottom part of the screen (it is important to establish a bookmark order) or by clicking on them.
